Humboldt's Internet/Telephone Outage Leaves Four Dead

I was in Garberville (much more on that later) manning an outstation.  It was hot.  I was in pain.  The odor of sweat and pot wafted through the air.  I had pulled into town with Nashville Pussy's "Struttin' Cock," which was appropriate.  Now it was after lunch (during which time I had tripped on the uneven sidewalk while walking to get a burrito) and it was hotter ... and the computer program I was using went down.  I called into the Eureka office in attempt to see if they were going through the same thing there.  All the lines were busy.  This was not good.

By the time I made it back to civilization, I learned that the Internet and phone service was out for most of the county.  I first heard it was due to solar flares.  Later it was tied to those fuckwads at AT&T.  Figures.  My cell phone is still down, though I've heard various reasons as to why.  My other phone and Internet is back up, however.  In the meantime, nobody could get through to 911, you know, in case grandma keeled over or something.  As far as I know, four people didn't die, but it's only a matter of time before one of these outages does leave someone dead.  A lot of people don't have land lines anymore.  Even if they did, and Suddenlink was their provider, they had no phone.  If you can't call out, you can't call 911.  If you can't call 911, you run the risk of dying.  Perhaps the psychotic ex, the one you have a restraining order against, comes barging in and you don't own a gun and aren't good with a blade.  Maybe you feel your chest tighten and have just enough strength to get to the front door.  Maybe you're waking up from a nap and the right side of your body has gone limp.  Maybe your kid starts going into convulsions and you don't have a car.  Either way, it's obvious Humboldt County needs some alternatives to one lone fiber optic line.  It's the equivalent of two cans and a string, and it's not working.

Hey, if I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd say between this and the chemical exposure at Kay Jewelers in the Bayshore Mall it would seem like a dry run for a terrorist attack.  At the very least, the fiber optic line is a good target for anyone looking to cripple the county.

The Internet is back.  Most phones are back up and running.  And this incident will soon be forgotten ... until it happens again in a few months.  Humboldt needs to stop relying on AT&T and start looking at other alternatives.  AT&T can't keep customers more than a few months, let alone run efficient fiber optic lines.  I got rid of the company a few years ago.  Here's to hoping the people of Humboldt decide to do the same.

Wisconsin Businesses Fight Back! Still Hope They Lose...

Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerece, a pro-business group issued some strong words against the boycott of Wisconsin businesses that supported governor Scott Walker in his 2010 campaign.  Wisconsin businesses apparently don't like losing money any more than public servants do.  Guess what, though?  If you take away the ability of someone to make money, you take away their ability to spend it, so ... why spend what money you do have at businesses that supported the man who took that money away?  James Haney, the president of that pro-business group, must think union members are as dumb as he is.  I support continuing the boycott.  In fact, here's the next business ...

AT&T!

My old enemy (you can find many posts on that company by clicking on the label below), through the AT&T Wisconsin Employee PAC donated $21,000 to Walker's campaign in 2010 from its headquarters on the 13th floor (how appropriate) of 722 North Broadway in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  (If you live nearby, you should stop in and see them.)  My hatred of AT&T is well-known.  The company is run by idiots and has some of the worst customer service in the business.  If you are a union member and the actions of Scott Walker righteously pissed you off, now is the time to drop your service plan and let the company know why.  Yes, an employee will try to talk you out of it, but stand firm.  Remember, an attack against one is an attack against all.

If you want to read the rest of the boycott list, this is a good website to go to.

Happy business busting!

The Cold Fingers of Death Reach the Blackest of Hearts

I have an unhealthy fascination with the THiS Network. It's just been added to the Suddenlink line-up here in Humboldt County, and I've already added it to my favorites and have called Suddenlink to tell them to never drop it. Older genre films? Chuck Norris? Vincent Price? The Dunwich Horror? Check to all those things. I swear if I see Death Bed in the line-up (unlikely as it's stuff that MGM has its hands on), I just may scream.

Suddenlink also offers Chiller, which is the horror channel; BBC America, home of Top Gear (the best show on television) and Gordon Ramsey, whose many shows never fail to impress me; and the other usual suspects. I gotta admit, despite the dumb-ass name Suddenlink actually is a pretty good cable company.

Cox was the company of choice in Humboldt before Suddenlink took over. If Suddenlink is a dumb name, Cox was downright unfortunate. How do you tell your employer that you have to be home all morning because you're waiting for Cox? There was no good way around that other than to say "the cable guy," which sounds like a lame excuse. Suddenlink, while not sounding obscene, actually sounds like something you would do in a video game. At least Viacom sounded official.

Suddenlink also offers up caller ID on your television. I am supposed to have this. I do not want it, but I did want to find out why I didn't have it. From what the Suddenlink lady told me, it was just a glitch on their end, and she turned it on for me ... except she didn't. So when I called back I told her that while I didn't want caller ID on my television, I was wondering why it wasn't on yet. As I said it, I realized how ridiculous this sounded. She did ask me what my complaint and call was about then. I said something like, "I'm not really sure. If you turned it on and it worked, I'm pretty sure it would just irritate me."

"Do you want me to send someone out?"

That was the last thing I wanted. If they were to do that, I'd probably have to take time off for Cox -- I mean Suddenlink.

"No. That won't be necessary."

"You would have caller ID then."

"I don't really want it." I thanked her for talking to me and then hung up.

She was polite the entire time (unlike those necrophiliacs at AT and T), and really didn't directly point out how stupid my line of questioning was. (Perhaps I'll see one of those hidden taxes they like to throw into a cable bill.) It made me appreciate the company a tad bit more ... and then THiS came and thoroughly blew me away. What other station shows Breaker! Breaker!? None! Not a single one. I'm sure that movie has been on television for at least a decade. (That said, I still won't watch it, but I'm glad it's there.)

So, thank you, Suddenlink. Thank you for your wonderful line-up and for your employees who put up with my moronic shit. Now, if you could Sy-Fy to change its name back you would be a corporate god in my book.

AT and T -- Creators of Swine Flu

There it was in my mailbox ... again. Another bill from AT and T ... again ... after my service has been over for two months. Earlier that week a telemarketer for AT and T called to tell me about the company's "low rates." Instead, I told him about the company's "incompetent managers and piss poor service."

This bill was really nothing more than a statement letting me know it received my two-plus-dollars, as if I cared whether or not it was received. "This is not a bill," it read.

God, I can't wait until the next AT and T patsy calls.

I Express Condolences To AT And T

I contacted AT and T through its website to give it my condolences on the recent sabotage it experienced (see last post). I only had 1,000 characters to work with. Enjoy the letter.

Recently heard about the fiber optic sabotage in California's Bay Area. Have to say I'm glad it happened. As a guy screwed over by AT&T's utter incompetence, I take great pleasure in the economic hardship and loss of public confidence the company is experiencing. My hat is off to the saboteur(s). Here's hoping you fine folks get sued for your lack of security. God knows I'd consider it if I lived down there. -You Friend, Doug Brunell http://cancerouszeitgeist.blogspot.com

AT and T Vandalism Makes My Day

My friend George sent me this article, which I am reprinting below. I had heard about the fiber optic lines being cut, but did not realize AT and T owned some of them. To the vandals: Kudos. I'm sure your beef wasn't with AT and T, but the fact that you cost them money gets my respect.

I'll keep you all posted when the FBI comes knocking.

You can read what you will into the bits about the union and the imported help. I think it speaks for itself.

See, AT and T! Everyone hates you! Snip.

$250,000 reward in phone cable vandalism

John Coté,Michael Taylor, Chronicle Staff Writers

Saturday, April 11, 2009

Authorities hope a quarter-million-dollar reward will shake loose a tipster to lead them to the vandals who severed underground fiber-optic cables, cutting off phone service for tens of thousands of people and disrupting life throughout southern Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties.

Investigators said Friday they are tracking down at least 10 leads and reviewing traffic-camera footage taken near one of four sites where the cables were cut Thursday in hopes of a breakthrough.

AT&T, which owns many of the severed cables, increased the $100,000 reward it offered after the cables were sabotaged to $250,000 on Friday, an incentive that police believe will be compelling.

"This case is going to be solved through a citizen contact," said San Jose police Sgt. Ronnie Lopez, calling the reward "huge."

No suspects have been named. Police revealed little about the investigation, saying some physical evidence had been found but providing no details.

The sabotage crippled parts of the three counties. Public safety crews that rely on 911 calls, hospitals trying to access medical records and people who wanted to make a landline or cell phone call, use an ATM or make a purchase with a credit card found services down. Repairs were completed, and full service was restored early Friday, about 24 hours after the first problems were reported.

Although many people trying to get emergency help via 911 were unable to do so for much of Thursday, officials were cautiously optimistic that no major problems had gone unreported.

"We've been running around doing a lot of service calls, but nothing as far as any major crime or emergency that was discovered," said Santa Cruz County sheriff's Sgt. Christine Swannack.
ifting manhole covers

Most of the 10 severed fiber-optic cables were in San Jose, where the first four were cut shortly before 1:30 a.m. Thursday in an underground vault along Monterey Highway north of Blossom Hill Road. Those belong to AT&T.

Four more underground cables, at least two of which belong to AT&T, were cut about two hours later at two locations near each other along Old County Road near Bing Street in San Carlos, authorities said. Two others were cut in south San Jose.

Each time, the vandals had to pry up manhole covers, climb down into vaults and chop through the thick cables.

Considering their importance to public safety and the economy, fiber-optic cables are not highly secured. The manholes are on public streets, and their covers generally are not that difficult to remove.

The typical manhole cover, a 250- to 350-pound disc of cast iron, can be removed with the use of a J-hook, a steel pole with a hook at one end, or any similar tool. AT&T spokesman John Britton said the vandals must have had access to such tools, but he declined to discuss what extra security precautions the company's manholes had, if any.

There are ways to deter thieves - or fiber-optic cable cutters - from getting into manholes, said Luke Menchl of the Neenah Foundry in Wisconsin, one of the nation's largest manufacturers of manhole covers.

Manhole covers can be locked with five- or six-headed bolts that require special tools to remove, he said. For those who want more security, there's a lock that Menchl likened to "a big security lug nut on expensive automobile wheels."

"U.S. embassies use them," Menchl said.

Ultimately, however, "getting a manhole cover up is not that difficult, even if it's bolted," Menchl said.
ontract talks

The sabotage in the South Bay came as AT&T was negotiating with the Communications Workers of America for a contract covering more than 80,000 employees, who have been working under their old pact since it expired Sunday.

"We are working under an expired contract and are prepared to strike at any time, which makes the timing of this vandalism difficult for us," said Libby Sayre, a regional director for the union.

"Neither the union nor its members are involved in this in any way," she said. "Our members spend their lives keeping up the equipment. We're confident they didn't do this."

Sayre said AT&T brought in contract workers earlier this year to work on fiber-optic cables in the South Bay, apparently to prepare them to take over in the event of a strike.

"There are nonunion employees who have access to the sites and the information to do this," Sayre said.

Britton said he had no specifics on contractors who have worked in the area.

"AT&T has used vendors at many times when different things come up," Britton said. "Do we have contingency plans for possible labor issues? Yes."

FBI agents are helping San Jose and San Carlos police with the "tedious, methodical process" of running down leads, Lopez said. The vandals could face federal and state charges.

In San Carlos, investigators reviewed footage from a red-light enforcement camera a few blocks from where the cables were cut in case the vandals were somehow recorded passing through, Cmdr. Rich Cinfio said.

"Everything's a possibility right now," Lopez said. "We're going to expect the unexpected."

My Minions Attack AT And T

Yesterday the credit from AT and T came. It sat in my mailbox right atop my last phone bill from the company. The bill, as noted earlier was for $2.17. Any company that runs its business like this (issuing refunds and bills without taking the bill out of the credit) deserves to go under. No bailout. No bonuses for CEOs. Nobody needs a company that runs this poorly. That's why I dropped it.

It's no the money that caused me to switch. It was the company's utter lack of understanding about its own products. (See my earlier posts.) And also its lack of customer service. Talking to people who have worked for the company has affirmed my stance that customer service means zip to the company. Therefore, I dropped it and declared war.

Every check I send, I include my blog address so that employees there can read about this. If any employee wants to post a horror story, go for it. Any readers, too. Enter it as a comment. It will be fun.

AT & T will most likely never have my business again. Never say never, though. It could monopolize everything and enslave us. When that happens, we send the minions out again. Let's have three cheers for the destruction of AT and T!

AT and T Headquarters Mishap

My war with AT and T continues. This week I received a notice stating I was getting a $53.61 credit. Since this was AT and T, I figured I'd call to make sure this was correct as AT and T has made a business out of not knowing how to run a business.

Sure enough it was true, but I also discovered that, after my final bill, I had an outstanding bill of $2.17! Normally, I wouldn't care. It's less than an issue of "100 Bullets," so not a big deal. Since this was AT and T, however, I had to pursue it. You guys love reading about this, and I love screwing with AT and T.

After talking to a few people at the rotting phone giant, I was put in touch with a seemingly frigid customer service representative. I asked why AT and T was charging me after my final bill. I was told it was for calls made after my final statement. Whatever. I then asked why the bill wasn't taken out of the credit, as that seemed to make the most sense. I was told that it just didn't work that way.

"Okay, so what would happen if I only pay part of this?" I asked.

"We'd send you a bill for the rest."

"So I could pay a nickle, and eventually AT and T would realize it was costing them more money to keep sending out letters?"

"No. We would turn it over to a collection agency," she answered. I had serious doubts any collection agency would take such a small debt. I didn't want to tell her that, though. She works for AT and T and doesn't understand things like "logic" and "common sense."

"Okay," I responded. "Then I'd like to set up a payment plan."

"For $2.17? We don't do that." She was pissed.

Looks like I'll be writing another letter and sending my blog address again. The war continues ...

He's A Killing Machine

It's about 1:30. Been up since before five a.m., but I can't sleep. My mind is racing. How can I get to PA? How can I move a family out here? I need a television. Can't beat Kinetica. Space Invaders Extreme is addictive. Work is killing me slowly and with intent. I don't understand the concept of "classic beauty." Hippies bug me. I hate when females pretend to be dumb in order to catch a guy's attention.

Yeah, my mind goes off on tangents sometimes.

Most of my problems stem from money ... or lack of it. Most of my friends' problems come from that same poisoned well. I'm lucky in the fact that I have a job. I know and appreciate that, but at what price? It provides me with money, which I need to keep a roof over my head, but my soul is slowly being burned out of me. With each passing day, incompetence, and co-workers with no work ethic threaten to overcome me. I'd rather be writing all day and living off my talent. Instead, I sit in front of a computer screen, enter data, and answer co-workers' questions (and I don't mind doing that). Didn't Devo ask how long this could go on?

To survive I do little things. Subversion. I humor myself. Anyone who knows me knows how that goes. It's how I get by when I'm not tying a noose.

I don't feel like I can complain. There is a lot of good in my life. Not everything. But a lot. I can feel good that I'm not that musclehead in the Verizon commerical or that my stool has no blood in it. I can't rest easy knowing I don't watch YouTube religiously, and I have no desire to get U2's latest. It's the little things.

Later on today I'm going to the tattoo shop to see JLo ink my supervisor. It's her first. It may or may not be her last. If you have a tattoo you know how that goes. One is never enough. That's another thing I need money for. Number 16. Black Flag bars. "Who needs love when you have a gun?" That was going to be my first tattoo. It won't be my last.

I am watching a commercial for The Night Exchange. Some 800 number you call to talk to real people. The lady on the phone in the commercial looked liked she was two seconds away from masturbating. Odd.

AT and T sent me my final bill today along with a statement that my latest bill, which is due on 3/20/09, is late. Today is 3/13/09. Apparently AT & T is as good as reading the calendar as it is in understanding its long distance plans. I plan on doing all kinds of shit to AT & T. Steal from its trucks. Vandalism. Happy trails to you.

AT and T Blamed For Rise In Breast Cancer

Got my AT and T bill, fully expecting a nice little credit. No such fucking luck. Not even an an apology. Looks like I'll have to write the company again.

I know people who swear by the company and have had good experiences. I believe it, too. I just got unlucky. I won't ever knowingly deal with the company again. In fact, I will now go out of my way to cost it money. Too bad there are more AT and T phone booths to destroy. Hey, here's an idea: Anyone who has any great (in a bad way) AT and T stories, photos, hacks, etc., send them in. I will publish them here.

Any employees of AT and T want to chime in? I won't print real names.

27.2.09

AT and T At Death's Door

I freed myself today. The cable guy said, "You are no longer an AT and T customer." I then launched into the story as he slowly made his way backward toward the door. He was scared, and I was mad. My arms were pumping up and down in excitement.

"And in conclusion," I said, "fuck AT and T!"

He seemed relieved I was done ranting, and then told me how the phone giant was losing customers and didn't seem to understand that it had competition.

Yeah, that felt good.

Had a really rough day today. It took exactly one minute at work to get pissed off at people's never ending stupidity. I wanted to put my fist through someone's face. Through the teeth and out the back of the skull, blood, bone and brain matter stuck to my knuckles.

That would've felt good, but probably would've caused a report to be written, and I can't do that to my supervisor, who deserves better than I've been given. I'm at the end of my rope with this job. I don't want to be an uncaring worker, but these fuckers make it so hard. Clients. Policy. Everything else. Lately it seems designed to irritate me.

My sister comes out tomorrow. Don't know how much I'll get to write while she is here. Probably very little.

I wish I were anywhere else right now. Well, actually I have a specific place in mind. An oasis. A place where things will be right.

I believe a decision has been reached in the ongoing saga. The story draws toward a new chapter, and I am no longer an AT and T customer. One more bill with those cancer-ridden cannibals. Maybe I'll send my payment with lice or crab eggs in it.

Now that would be mean, wouldn't it?

It's a thought, but I don't want to infest some sucker who probably hates the company as much as I do. To all AT and T employees who may read this: Steal as much shit as you can. You deserve it. And if this offended you, dear employee, I hope you're the one getting stolen from.

AT and T -- My Jihad

I actually talked to a guy today who used to be a customer service trainer for AT and T. He had some interesting things to say.

First he told me that the company's policy, in his opinion, was to confuse customers until they gave up. Then he told me that when he started, the company was experiencing that 33% of all first time customers canceled their service within a year ... due to just such things.

Color me not surprised.

Still haven't heard from AT and T, but I am now switching service.

11.2.09

Hey, Pig

I got an e-mail about this blog. The person wouldn't comment on here, afraid I may say something. The blog, according to her, is depressing. I'm dragging her down. Bumming her out. "I know I'm not your best friend, but if you lost a friend, so what? Get over it. Friends come and go."

I refrained from responding. Friends do come and go when you don't care, but when you keep the gates like I do, any friend leaving is like losing a limb. (And truth be told, I think I can salvage this lost friendship if I'm given a chance.) What I wanted to do with this letter writer was show her how it feels. I wanted to drag her into the gutter and put a cigarette out on her cheek. Instead, I got a phone call from another friend from back East, and I was thrilled.

I was kind of explaining the situation (and I thank her for offering to show up at my place wearing nothing, and if that ever happens I will take full advantage of the situation if the mood strikes me), and she said something along the lines that all this heartache goes away, gets better, and you forget about it and move on.

I begged to differ. It goes away, gets better, but you don't forget.

I compared it to being shot in the face. The bullet catches your lower jaw and just tears it to shreds. Your tongue is a mess. Teeth are gone. You are rushed to the hospital. Surgeons do what they can, and they are pretty amazing, so they've got you back together. Your jaw, however, is wired shut. For the next few weeks you'll have to sip soup through a straw while your wounds heal. You'll have an IV, too, but you've also got that delicious chicken soup. You can't forget that. Once the wounds heal enough, the docs will clip those wires. Now you'll need therapy so you can talk again. That won't be fun. And did they mention the scars? You'll see them everytime you shave.

You don't want to forget that pain. You don't want to be shot in the face again. Yes, you'll get better, but only a fool forgets. Only a fool wants to relive that.

The shit I write here is my therapy. It beats carving up people or burning down banks. It keeps my mind off my mind. I'd be doing it even if nobody was reading, and I don't know how many people actually are. (If the publisher of my poker book puts this blog on its site, I think more will be coming my way, though.) I don't care, however. It's out there. If I can connect with just one person, which I think I have, I'll have done my job.

Not every post is going to be about how AT and T is staffed by morons or how great Voodoo Rhythm Records is. Some are going to be dirty little wounds that quickly grow into infections.

A co-worker, who is also a friend, told me today that I was the luckiest guy. That I always had women at my desk. I told her she was crazy. That I'm not lucky. That women don't swoon over me. In fact, I think most women hate me. I have issues. I'm not a "bad boy" (meaning I don't beat women or think I am the center of the universe), and I think I'm socially awkward. I have never had an easy time meeting women, but the one's I've met have been great. I don't do the dating thing. I try to treat the opposite sex as equals, and I try to be a nice guy. All those things are sexual/romantic/social poison. I don't have all kinds of women at my desk at work, and I don't think I'm a "good catch." I think I've been lucky ... in some cases very lucky. But the losses have been great, and that's hard to deal with.

My luck, as little as there ever was, has run out. I'm broken, bruised, battered and bitter. I'm also tired. I don't care about this anymore. I don't want to care. I have fallen under the spell of apathy when it comes to my life, and that scares me. I'm not boiling animal skulls anymore, or shooting the windows out of cars parked at the bar, but something is brewing ... and that something can't be good.

The Number You Are Trying to Reach ...

The following is a letter I sent to AT and T [can't use the "and" symbol in a blog for some reason ] after I received a crazy phone bill and had an even more insane experience talking to customer service and a supervisor. Enjoy.

To Whom it May Concern:

A complaint.

On 1/30/09 I called AT and T to ask a few questions about my long distance bill. My wife had been told previously that any calls within the 707 area code were free, but I had a phone bill that said differently. As to be seen, we weren’t the only ones confused by this. So were the AT and T employees.

The first customer service woman I talked to (and I have since found out notes have been made on my phone call, so please refer back to them) told me I was mistaken about the area code information. When I asked what calls were free, she told me it had to do with mileage and then quoted me three different mileage rates: 8 miles, 13 miles and 20 miles. Anything outside the mileage rate (which rate was anyone’s guess) would be considered long distance. I told her it was ridiculous for me to figure out the mileage (as if that were even possible) for every call I wanted to make, and she agreed. She then asked how much my “television” bill was. I told her it was less than my phone bill, and then she offered to sell me some bundled packages.

Not appreciated.

Perhaps if I was calling to say how much I loved AT and T, or to actually inquire about services, this would be warranted. Why would I buy bundled services from someone who said my long distance bill was based on mileage? Was she part of your prisoner work program?

I asked to talk to a supervisor. This was one of the rare times I actually regretted that, as the supervisor was even more confused than the customer service employee. You wouldn’t think that was possible but the Peter Principle seems to be alive and well in AT and T land.

The supervisor initially told me the only free calls were calls within my prefix range, then said that all calls in 707 area code were free ... and then went back to the prefix angle. I asked if she could understand how someone could be confused by their plan when they didn’t even seem to know what was free and what wasn’t, and then asked if the 269 prefix was free for me to call. She stated it was not. When I pointed out that the AT and T phone book says differently, she said the phone book was wrong and then advised me to call the FCC. I said I was calling her since this was her company’s bill. She told me if I wanted to know what prefixes I could call, I could consult the website. I asked if she were sure the website would be correct since it also had AT and T’s name on it, and she stated that she couldn’t be sure because “they” (the FCC? AT and T? the web? God?) change prefixes all the time.

That seems to be a problem, and I pointed that out to her. How was I to tell what was a free call if she couldn’t even do it. (I understand it’s probably not her job to be able to understand these plans and explain them.) She offered to read me all the prefixes I could call for free, and I took her up on the offer. Oddly enough, one of the free ones was the 269 prefix, which just minutes before was a toll call. Apparently “they” changed that one, too. When I pointed this out, she admitted she had made a mistake.

And I have to still pay this bill? Are you serious? A loyal customer has to put up with such inept service? Can you direct me to any other companies where this is acceptable? I’d like to avoid them.

After I was told I would not have the charges removed from my bill, I asked the supervisor for the name of a local payment center she hated because I was going to pay the bill with pennies and tell them that she told me to go there. El Pueblo Market was where she advised me to go. So I called them (praying it was one of the free prefixes and wouldn’t be changed mid-call by “them”).

When I told the store manager of El Pueblo that the supervisor listed his place as the store I should pay my bill in hundreds of pennies, he was a bit shocked. (In all fairness, his store is the only local payment center, but I wouldn’t let such facts stand in the way of his puzzlement and anger. After all, nobody at AT and T let the facts come into play at any time during my call, and I wasn’t acting as an AT and T ambassador.) He wanted to know why AT and T would do this, and I told him that I had asked the supervisor for a pay center she hated, and that she gave me his market. He’s probably used to that hatred since his business is like one of two Mexican markets in a predominately white area of CA. I then told him I’d be paying AT and T by check and not to worry, as I wouldn’t burden him with 50 pounds of pennies. He thanked me. Perhaps he’s called you fine folks by now to inquire. If he hasn’t, perhaps he fell for that whole mileage thing and decided you were too far away to call.

So my choices are this: use my cell phone exclusively, go to a new carrier, or keep AT and T and ask that you credit my bill. To help in the decision making process, I’ll fill give you some information you may or may not know about me. I’m a writer.

Now, I wouldn’t say I’m a famous writer like that King character, but my name gets around. Go to your local video store and there’s a good chance you’ll find at least one movie with a quote from me on it. I have a book that reached #8 on the Barnes and Noble best seller list for its category, and my short stories have outsold actor John Lithgow’s. I’ve also written those little essays that appear in DVDs. So, yeah, some people read my work.

They also read my blog.

Guess what company is going to be making an appearance on said blog? That’s right. AT&T. You can find it at http://cancerouszeitgeist.com. If it isn’t on the main page by the time you get to it, just enter AT and T into the search engine. I think you’ll find it. I’m also willing to publish the outcome. That ball, as they say, is in your court.

This entire situation was uncalled for. I don’t believe my wife heard the AT and T representative incorrectly when turning off our long distance. The customer “service” I received shows that it is your workers who are confused about the services they are selling. Either that, or they are purposely misleading. Neither one bodes well for the company. Look at it this way. More and more people are getting rid of their land lines. Don’t you think you should be going out of your way to keep customers?

And I still have to pay this bill?

I paid so not to be delinquent. I made the calls. I admit that. There may be more on my next bill. I made them with a false impression of my service, however, but I still made them, and so I am paying for them. You may also know that as “taking the high road.” Will AT and T do the same? Will my blog readers end up having some faith in the company? Or will some bored news agency pick up the story for one of those slightly humorous “can you believe this, folks” type pieces they love to do?

Oh yeah, I’ve written press releases, too.

How will we resolve this? A credit? A continued campaign to bring attention to the totally insane customer service I received? Do tell. I’m curious.
